Union Jack Pillow

Ever since I rented my booth on March 1, I have been nonstop brainstorming ideas on what I want my space to look like, things I want to fill it with, things I know are popular right now, and things I can make quickly and inexpensively.

One of the trends I LOVE right now is the Union Jack. I don't think I would have the patience to paint one on a piece of furniture so I made a pillow using this picture I found on Pinterest for inspiration.

Now, I have to tell you, other than an extremely simple pillow case I made for my son recently I have never used a sewing machine in my life. I got one for Christmas this year and I had fun figuring things out.

I bought a 14 x 14 pillow form from Joanne's 40% off and used a drop cloth and lace for my material.

I cut two squares from my drop cloth. They measured 15 x 15 for seam allowance.

I cut four strips of drop cloth each about 2 inches wide. Two are 15 inches in length. The other two are 21 inches in length. I folded and ironed down the sides for a nice seam.

I cut four strips of lace the same lengths as the drop cloth.

Then I sewed on a strip of drop cloth and then went back and sewed on the lace.

Continue this process

Until all your strips are sewn in place.

Then, I sewed the 15 x 15 squares together, inserted my pillow form, and slip stitched the open seam.

I am so pleased with how my first major sewing project turned out!!! This pillow will be going to my booth, but I wish I could keep it for myself. :) I love it!!
