Sign Tutorial

I got asked by a reader from my Before and Afters post if I could do a tutorial on how I made my Fresh Apple Cider sign. Thank you Kelsey for the request! So, here is how I made my sign.

I took the broken off box lid from this box that I found at an estate sale.

I cleaned up the lid then gave it a good sanding with my orbital sander.

Next, I used the same vinegar technique that I used on my farm table redo to give the lid an aged wood look. But, you can also paint if you are going for something different. I just brushed on the vinegar mixture and let it dry.

While the lid was drying I worked on creating my stencil. I found a font and size I liked using Microsoft Word and then placed a piece of paper directly over my computer screen to trace the letters. You can also print the words or use a Cricut or Silhouette if you have one. Once everything was traced, I used an Exacto knife to cut out the letters making a stencil.

Make sure you keep the small pieces cut out like I did from the a, p's, e's, and d. You'll need them to create a proper stencil. Place your stencil where you want them positioned on your sign and tape them down. I just rolled up a small piece of painter's tape to secure the inner pieces of the a, p's, e's, and d. I hope this makes sense. Then I used a foam brush and acrylic craft paint and dabbed over the stencil.

Finally, I used a tiny paint brush to touch up any bleed throughs and sanded it with a sanding block until the letters were nicely distressed.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

  1. What a cool way to repurpose a lid--very creative! And I agree, I love using the vinegar/steel wool mixture to age wood.
