Old Door - New Message Center

Jacque from Jacque's Soda Parlor asked me how I painted these chairs to get the black/grey distressed look.

I didn't take pictures along the way (bad blogger!) so I'll be showing you a project I just finished of an old cabinet door where I used the same painting/glazing technique.

I took one of these doors that I found at Salvation Army and removed the curtain behind it.

 

I painted it a really pale blue and then I took my orbital sander and went over the entire door and heavily distressed the corners and edges. The stain I use for the antique glaze will get down into every area that you sand. If you want a subtle glazed look, go light with the sanding and hit only the corners and edges. I went heavy over the entire door because I wanted the stain to bring out all the details and imperfections.

Next I used Minwax dark walnut stain for the glazing. Just brush it on in small areas with a foam brush. 

Make sure you wear gloves and wipe it off with an old rag. I use an old t-shirt. Rub off the stain until you are happy with the color. I wipe it off as much as I can so it's not too dark. 

Here's the door completely glazed. See the different textures where the stain went down into the areas sanded? I love how it darkens the corners and edges. 

Here's my message center completed. I stapled chicken wire to the back on the top and painted a thin piece of board with chalkboard paint for the bottom. I (and by I, I mean my husband) added a brushed nickel bin pull to the bottom to hold the chalk. Sorry the pictures are so blurry. I was in a rush to finish to put my son to bed.
